On the 73rd anniversary of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, Russian President Vladimir Putin pays his respects at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier. In Russia, June 22nd marks what is called the Great Patriotic War, the period in World War II from 1941 to 1945.

Now it is peace that he has on his mind as he offers backing to the peace plan offered by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

"So many years after the start of the Great Patriotic War -- blood is being spilled on the territory of the former Soviet Union. It is horrible. The fact that President Poroshenko announced a ceasefire is no doubt an important part of the final resolution, maybe one of the most important ones. Without this it would be impossible to agree on anything. And without any doubt Russia will support these intentions."

The seven-day ceasefire began last Friday, but Putin says the fighting is still going on.
