Nobody’s Sweetheart - Gene Mayl and his Dixieland Rhythm Kings.
In this 1982 live broadcast we see Gene and his band play one of these great traditional jazz tunes especially popular among jazz musicians because of their interesting chord structure and easy melody line ideally suited for improvisation.
Cornettist Ernie Carson does a superb job getting these Wild Bill Davison licks happening. All together the band swings beautifully and before the final endchorus the frontline ensemble is able to fall back in volume to work up to a smashing end. This was the specialty of the early Chicago jazz musicians as well.
In this clip we see bassist Gene with the his band: Famous cornettist Ernie Carson: Kim Cusack (usually with the Salty Dogs) clarinet and vocal; Hans Kuenzel trombone; the outstanding pianist John Ulrich on piano and Ken Hall playing drums
