The United States Patent and Trademark Office has cancelled 6 of the Washington Redskins’ name registrations.
Their decision is the result of a complaint brought before them by Amanda Blackhorse.
Before nullifying the NFL team’s filings, the Trademark Trial and Appeals Board reviewed a variety of documentation, including dictionary definitions, media clips, and scholarly articles.
After the ruling was announced, Blackhorse expressed that she was happy about the outcome, but reminded people that it is just one step of many needed to get the Washington team to change its name.
The Redskins are expected to appeal the ruling, as they did in a similar case filed in 1992.
