A gas pipeline in central Ukraine exploded on Tuesday (June 17) along the main pipeline route that carries Russian gas through Ukraine to the rest of Europe.
Video released by Ukraine's Emergencies Ministry showed flames erupting from the pipeline near Lokhvitsya in Ukraine's Poltava region and emergency personnel surveying metal parts strewn across a field.
Ukraine's interior minister said on Wednesday (June 18) the explosion had been caused by a bomb, prompting the prime minister to order security reinforcement on the country's gas pipeline network.
The explosion came after Moscow cut gas supplies into Ukraine in a long-standing pricing row with Kiev.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk on Wednesday ordered security to be strengthened at pipeline installations.
Though there were no casualties and gas flows were not interrupted, the blast increased tension as Kiev, which is trying to end an uprising by pro-Rus
