Ellen Shaw - Squatters

2014-06-17 1

The letters on the doormat glowed
blue in the darkness
and were cold under soft soled bare feet
I became a dragon in the hallway
exhaling steam when I had to breathe
Flames flickered atop candles scattered around
dancing light creating dancing demons
too dark to find a safe place to sleep
too dark, too empty, too cold to breathe
and the air sat heavy with menace
we shouldn't have been there at all
We had no choice but to seek comfort
in that cage of darkness and cold
