Charles Darkly - Spilyáy (Coyote)

2014-06-17 10

On a long monotonous reservation road
trickster phantasm's mischievous eyes
suddenly gleam against my headlights
a grinning apparition of tradition
I slam the brakes down so hard
I'll feel aftershock pain in my spine
for weeks to come
Gritty slide and squeal of panicked tires reeling back
against fuel injected momentum
The absence of oncoming traffic a small blessing
as I cross lanes and regain control
mere inches from goat head infested ravines
Coyote stares me down grinning
without saying a word
but those raving ancient eyes tell me
I should stop taking this life
for granted
