There are familiar images of Christmas,
Promoted every year,
Of trees and snow and holly
And of houses warm with cheer.
As it comes around to Christmas,
I look at them with great intent,
To find the ones I'll use this year
And to my friends be sent.
I'm not so sure I want the birds or holly,
Or the cards with the trees and family,
Or the glowing snow bound cottage that's so jolly,
These are just not the images for me.
I want to see a guiding star up in the heavens,
And some travellers persuing it below,
Or a stall that holds an ass and ox and baby,
Or some angels singing Gloria, Gloria Gloria
It's the birthday of one who came as promised,
To bring hope, joy and peace and more,
These are the gifts our world is sadly lacking
And not the jolly holly, singing birds and all things snow.
