As he lay there just a shadow
Of the man he used to be,
A vision entered in his head
Of his home and family.
His trembling body now just a shell,
This poor soul had been through hell.
No strengh left to rebel
He lay there dying where he fell.
From the darkness came a light
He thought this was the end,
But then he heard a gentle voice
The voice of his best friend.
His friend reached out his hand to him
Then took him in his arm's.
He dodged the raging bullet's
And sheltered him from harm.
He laid him down upon the ground
In a place he would be safe,
Then tearfully whispered to him
Hold on to your faith.
He lay there in the darkness
Scared and so alone,
Then came the sound of the engine
Which came to take him home.
This soldier now is grateful
That his life did not end,
And pray's thank's to the bravery
Of his comrade, his best friend.
