According to the St. Joseph County's Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, the victim had been drinking prior to the crash.

The driver of the van fled from the accident site but was later arrested for ‘OWI causing serious bodily injury and leaving the scene.’

Police say the fatal crash is a combination of drunk driving and freak, unfortunate circumstances.

A woman who lives close to the accident scene remarked “You've got a 24-year-old child, you've raised to be a young adult and has their whole life ahead of them and it's snuffed out because of a decision that was made and because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
