Better known for big blockbuster productions like ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Elf’, Jon Favreau’s latest movie is a low-budget indie film that tells the story of a restaurant chef who is fired for going off-menu and decides to open his own food truck.
Favreau produces, directs and stars in the movie, enlisting the help of A-list friends including Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Dustin Hoffman.
Produced with the help of Los Angeles food-truck legend Roy Choi, the film takes Favreau on the ultimate food-lover’s road trip across America:
“I went to culinary school and worked in the kitchen with chef Roy Choi who I trained with,” says Favreay. “I wanted to look like I knew what I was doing so that I wouldn’t make a fool of myself.”
‘Chef’ tells how Favreau’s character refuses to compromise his creative integrity – a dilemma he has faced in real life: “As a filmmaker you face a lot of the same things that the chef in this movie does, where you have to balance out what your passions are and what the business concerns are. And making a little movie like this is much like how he makes use of a food truck in the film, where on a small scale you get to have a lot of freedom,” he says.
While some critics have been charmed by the movie describing it as “a foodie’s delight” and “enormous fun”, others were unimpressed calling it “an agreeable but unmemorable tale”.
Jon Favreau’s ‘Chef‘ is out now in cinemas.
