At least 48 people have been killed in Kenya after a string of attacks targeted two hotels and a police station.

Islamic militants are thought to be behind the deadly incident, though no group has yet claimed responsibility.

The attacks took place around the town of Mpeketoni, near the popular tourist destination of Lamu Island.

Residents report that around 30 gunman mounted the assault, firing automatic weapons and using at least one explosive device.

It is the deadliest attack in Kenya since Somali group Al-Shabab besieged Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall last year.
