today I read 12 letters
that I had refused to open
as if holding onto them
would delay the inevitable.
you spoke of love and life
and war and friendship
you told of the times we shared
and the plans we made.
I wonder if you knew
that I would need your words
to hold in my hand
and press to my heart.
i fall asleep with your letters
under my pillow
as if by doing so I will
relive the moments your words recall.
