I remember a vast dark ocean,
Sometimes calm, sometimes stormy.
Me swimming for my life,
To stay on the surface,
Stop myself from drowning.
I remember how, now and then,
I just needed someone
To take my hand,
For a moment to hold me up,
Let me regain my strength,
Feel their warmth run through me
To relieve the chill.
I remember people sailing past.
They would smile and wave
But none reached out to me.
Did they think I would pull them in
To drown with me?
Or did they think me a pirate
Waiting to storm aboard and
Steal their boat?
I completed my journey.
I survived and thrived.
But I still remember the times
When I needed a little help.
I still remember
That there was not one
Who was brave enough
- Just to hold my hand.
