A girl awaits her lover in the park,
and gazes in the shadows nearer crept
to form his likeness from the changing dark
at last to pale it, and form his eager step.
Around her the evening torrent floods the day
out of existence. Her proud, lifted profile fades
along with hope, washed to a moonless gray.
From crowded thought the first of many tears invades
occulted loveliness no lover meets.
She stuffs small fists into her pockets deep.
The realm of stars envelopes her complete.
Sorrow afflicts her now; I hear her weep
as she sits undeparting in her plight.
I offer her my elbow through the night.
