Poems don't pay the bills
So I have to work
As a lawyer
As a poet
I grapple with meaning
And hope to parse
The sunset into tomorrow
I look for joy
Amidst the darkness
And pray for greater truth
To lift its arms and hold me
And wish
That each day
Might find meaning in the moment.
And until poetry pays the bills
I'll nevertheless
Keep writing it
Because it matters.
