He was such a special young fellow
When Uncle Harold went off to the war
“Wet behind the ears, ” as they say
He didn’t know the worldly score
But, you know, it didn’t really matter
For he was ready to enlist
Like so many young men his age
The service didn’t have to insist
For most were more than ready
To fight hard for their country
They put their lives on hold
And fought for you and for me
Uncle Harold was no different
He packed his bags, you see
Was ready for wherever he was sent
Then said good-by to his family
England was where he went
There was a war going on over there
He not only did what he had to do
He did more than was his share
There were many hardships of course
He had sicknesses off and on
But Uncle Harold fought for his country
And he continued to be very strong
So you see, he is a hero in our family
And to our nation too as well
He wrote in a daily diary, and
This is the story he had to tell!
