poetry is getting
to the roots of us all
getting into that lake
in us to find what
there are in it
looking at the sun
and tracing its footsteps
to see how it travels
to our soul and
communicates with it
poetry is going
to that part of us
which once spent
a thousand million years
to acquire the faculty
of speech and reasoning
from the workings of the wind, the moon, the sun
and the whole solar system
