N0SFERATU, Ein Symphonie Des Grauens (1922)

F. W. Murnau's now-classic (but unauthorized) adaptation of Bram Stoker's DRACULA is inspired in its execution, remaining one of the best vampire movies made even after nearly a century. It has creepiness and atmosphere in buckets--but what it didn't have when first created was the permission of the Stoker estate or, for that matter, critical acclaim either. Yet, like the vampire Count himself, it has survived and thrived. (The critics have come around, though Stoker's widow never did.)

[This English-language print of NOSFERATU changed the character names from Murnau's version--"Graf Orlok", "Hutter", "Ellen", "Knock", etc.--back to those of the characters they represented--"Count Dracula", "Harker", "Mina" "Renfield", etc.]
