Alice Slater - The garden in the early summer morning

2014-06-12 10

The garden
While all sleep, the sun shines on
Early in the morning.
I do my daily rounds,
Observing who grew last night
And how by how much

The peace is such a gift
Assailing my ears like an orchestra
The birds go about their business
And I wish you were here to share with me
Each plant’s daily progress
Like so many children we know
Who did what and when, and when
One ails, why,

You know volumes about gardens
It’s a joy to hear you talk about the plants
To hear you name them, and discuss
Individual quirks they have
Their needs and dislikes
