Residents in Malaysia are dealing with an influx of huge moths that reportedly measure up to 6 inches in length. The insects are finding their way into homes. The moths even hampered a national football match.
Last month, approximately 800 sightings of the massive moths were also reported in Singapore. The species is classified as the Lyssa Zampa tropical moth or the Laos brown butterfly. The moths are the largest found in South East Asia.
This year’s sighting count appears to have reached the highest ever, but the moths are actually nothing new. They’re present during other times of the year, only in smaller numbers. The insects emerge between April and August annually.
Many Malaysians and Singaporeans are taking to social media to share their captured photos of the moths. The Director of the National Biodiversity Centre at the National Parks Board in Singapore, Lena Chan stated “There is no need for people to protect themselves against these moths as they do not cause any allergies or diseases. In fact, they are important pollinators and are beautiful to watch.”
