Peter Wilder - Home Again

2014-06-11 11

Home, not a place
Not a line on a map with your hand you can trace
But a line in the smile of a loved one’s face
And a calm in the storm that is raging

Brother, not a man or a boy
Nor a friend with a toy
But a person who shares all your dreams,
When your body is aging

Sister, not a sibling in dresses
But a place where the messes
Of life can be laid at the doors

Mother, not the person who had me
Or the person who held me
But the person who loved me
Despite all my failures and flaws

Father, not the man who conceived me
But the man who believed me
When I lost belief in myself

Family, not some people you choose
Not something you can lose
But a place to leave pride on the shelf

God, not something that you pray to
When you’re not feeling strong
Not a place that you go to
When you want to belong;

But a song in your heart
In the wind and the sky
In the touch of a hand
In a long kiss goodbye
In the breath of your baby
A lovers sigh
The heat of the sun
The cold of the wind
The pain of our birth
Where our journey’s begin
The lash of the rain
And the calm of the storm
The glue when our dreams
Are all tattered and torn

And the strength that was there all along
