A tractor trailer driver tragically passed away on Wednesday after a manhole cover flew through the windshield of his truck. At approximately 5:30 in the morning, the 35-year-old man named Jose Duran had been traveling westbound in the center lane of the Cross Bronx Expressway in New York City.
It’s currently not known how the cover became airborne, but it rapidly sailed through the air and flew straight into the windshield of the 2010 truck Duran was operating. Once it crashed past the glass, the manhole cover struck him in the head.
Duran’s truck then hit a 2012 tractor trailer that was also traveling westbound. Duran was left trapped inside his vehicle.
Rescue crews were able to pull him out and he was transported to the nearby Lincoln Hospital, where he later passed away. The driver of the other truck is unharmed.
The New York City Police Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and what caused the manhole cover to explode and fly through the air.
