The Principality of Sealand, established in 1967 a few miles off of the eastern coast of Britain, could be the smallest country in the world.

Officially gaining the title isn’t a matter of size. It only has 22 residents.

The problem is that it’s unclear if Sealand can in any way be considered a country or not.

It was established on an abandoned British World War 2 sea fort located in international waters.

It has a constitution, a currency, titled leaders, and even a football team.

While lacking any official distinction of being a sovereign state, it runs itself as an independent entity.

Leadership of it has already passed down one generation. Upon the death of its founder and previous leader, the head of state title and duties were passed along to his son, His Royal Highness Prince Michael.

The Sealand powers that be have come up with a unique way to build their economy.

They sell their nation’s property for 32 dollars a square foot and royal titles for between 52 and 360 bucks.
