Tensions in the area had already risen following the deaths of two Kurdish men in earlier protests.

The new army posts are seen as a threat to a peace process between the government and the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Police fired tear gas and water cannon at demonstrators who threw stones and burnt barricades following the funeral of one of the victims.
