A call to put down weapons in Central African Republic

It's a country ripped apart by violence.

It's been that way since Muslim Seleka rebels seized power in 2013 in the mostly Christian Central African Republic.

While the Seleka left power in January, it's failed to stop the bloodshed.

Now tentative steps to disarm, with the government offering a voluntary disarmament.

Prime Minister Andre Nzapayeke sounded an upbeat note.

(SOUNDBITE) (French) CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC PRIME MINISTER, ANDRE NZAPAYEKE, SAYING:

"We are satisfied - you see there are people with a good will, it's only 11 am and already and they're coming here to get rid of these dangerous weapons weapons, get rid of grenades, as you see here, that are very dangerous, particularly for the youth, and children. "

The hope is for all sides to disarm.
