The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spoke to veterans in Normandy on Friday (June 6) as part of commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Prince William and his wife Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, who is popularly known as Kate, sat at tables decked out in Union Jack bunting to meet veterans in the town of Arromanches.

French President Francois Hollande has also welcomed world leaders including Prince William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, for a lunch and displays as part of the ceremonies.

Wreaths, parades and parachute-drops honoured history's largest amphibious assault on June 6, 1944, when 160,000 U.S., British and Canadian troops waded ashore to confront Nazi Germany's forces, hastening its defeat and the advent of peace in Europe.
