According to her boyfriend, Vaughn was struck in the face by a fin before being bitten in the leg. She didn’t realize what exactly happened at first, but knew something had attacked her.
The friends helped Vaughn back on the boat and saw the huge gash on her leg. They transported her to a nearby dock, where Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue personnel took over.
She was then taken to Broward Health Medical Center for surgery. Doctors at the facility believe she was bitten by a 3-4 foot long bull shark, as the species is known to frequent inland waterways.
Vaughn’s surgery was a success and according to medical staffers, she’s recovering beautifully. She doesn’t have insurance, so her friends have set up a page on Gofundme to help pay for expenses.
Despite all the setbacks, Vaughn feels fortunate she survived the attack.
