The Apple Of Your iOS: What The Tech Giant's New Software Will Look Like

Apple's 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco is mere hours away already over. Anticipation is high as developers and techies the world over wait for Apple to unveil its new operating systems, iOS 8 and OS X 10.10.  There is also speculation that Apple may announce a home automation system, the Healthbook app, the iPhone 6, the iWatch, a new Mac and more. We'll be updating this article space with live coverage of the event as news unfolds so check back here to follow along with us!

3:08PM: It's all over folks! Major updates relevant to users are: HomeKit (Apple's new home automation system that turns your iPhone into a remote control for your house), HealthKit (a health and fitness app that logs and aggregate health-related stats and info), Family Sharing (purchases made in the Apple store will be available to everyone in your family) the Siri and Shazam combo, new SMS features (the ability to leave group chats, recorded video/audio messages, the "do not disturb function" and QuickType), and more compatibility between iOS and OS devices. iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 Yosemite will be available to the public in the fall.

3:05PM: Tim Cook is wrapping up. Doesn't look like there is going to be a new iPhone or iWatch.

2:59PM: For all the coders out there, Swift looks pretty fast and dope, but you'll have to look into it yourself. I have no idea what's going on.

2:56PM: Federighi is debuting a new programming language called "Swift." The crowd is going nuts over this.  Federighi just said, "You know how many people at home are going 'what the heck are these guys talking about?'" Uh, yeah.

2:54PM: Epic Games has created an app called "Zen Garden" for iOS 8 that displays the stunning capability of Metal. They are showing a cherry tree with 5,000 physically simulated petals. It's pretty amazing.



2:50PM: Founder of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney is coming to the stage to talk about Metal.

2:49PM: Federighi is introducing "Metal," a new graphics booster.

2:48PM: CloudKit -- stuff for app developers.

2:47PM: With HomeKit you can control individual devices in your home as well as bundles of devices. You can use Siri with HomeKit. For example, if you tell Siri to "get ready for bed," it will make sure your door is locked, your garage door is closed and lights are off.

2:46PM: Here comes the home automation system: HomeKit.

2:45PM: Third-party apps can now use touch ID. Super useful for apps you might not want other people getting in to.

2:44PM: You can now install third-party keyboards.
 
2:42PM: Apps can be opened as "extensions" in Safari and can interact with content in Safari.

2:39PM: Third-party apps can now offer widgets that go into the notification center in the "Today" view. So, if you download an app that comes with a widget, it will automatically show up in your "Today" view.

2:37PM: "SDK," the biggest release since the App Store. Apps will be able to extend the system and offer service to other apps. E.g.: An app like Bing could offer translating inside of Safari.

2:36PM: Testflight is a new, free beta test service for developers and users.

2:35PM: Tim Cook is back and talking about updated features in the App Store that will benefit developers and users. Users
