As the seventieth anniversary of the D-Day landings approaches on June 6, ceremonies have been taking place in Britain to mark the day that swayed the course of the Second World War.
Five veterans of the D-Day landings on the Normandy coast have made a return to the warship they served on and that played an important role in the operation, the HMS Belfast.
Just 500 of the 61000 soldiers who fought on that pivotal day in history are still alive.
Edward Cordery, D-Day veteran:
“My wife said to me, it’s terrible isn’t it? There’s still all this business going on in Afghanistan. I said yes. And when I look back, I did five years in the Navy, hoping to stop this sort of thing. Wasn’t very successful, was I?”
World leaders including Queen Elizabeth, US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to attend a commemorative ceremony in Normandy on Friday. euronews will be reflecting on the events of 70 years ago throughout the week.
