In Bangkok railway stations and streets that had been closed in expectation of demonstrations were reopened on Monday morning. The move came as Thailand’s ruling junta announced a series of measures aimed at averting an economic crisis and restoring the confidence of investors.
“After all the problems that have happened, all Thais should now work together. Right now everyone should be walking in the same direction. I agree with the measures that have been imposed against the protesters,” said Cherdpan Kaewkamnerd a self employed worker in the capital.
On Sunday the army council ordered over 5,500 troops and police into central Bangkok and sealed off the commercial district in expectation of a huge demonstration.
But the protests were mostly limited to small gatherings staged around shopping malls.
The generals took power two weeks ago and analysts say the fact the junta has announced detailed economic plans is another suggestion it expects to be in power for some time.
