STORY: North Korea's state-run television KRT on Monday (June 2) released still photographs of leader Kim Jong Un visiting an orphanage in Pyongyang on International Children's Day.
The still photographs were taken on June 1st KRT reported, showed a smiling Kim sitting in a classroom interacting with the children and watching them as they ate and rode bikes in the playground in Pyongyang.
More than a quarter of children in North Korea are chronically malnourished, a U.N.-backed nutrition survey published in March, 2013 showed.
Sporadic famines are commonplace in North Korea, which is prone to floods, droughts and harsh winters. A famine in the 1990s killed at least a million people, rights groups say.
The government blames natural disasters for food shortages but observers say economic mismanagement is also responsible.
