Thai anti-coup protesters in Bangkok scuffled with troops on Sunday as they tried to evade a heavy security operation aimed at preventing dissent.
Protesters showed up near the Terminal 21 shopping centre, chanting and holding signs saying “No Coup” and giving three-fingered salutes.
One anonymous protester explained, “The meaning of this sign is anti-coup. We want democracy. We don’t want the military to take control.”
Pro-democracy protesters have come out on the streets nearly every day, marching through Bangkok denounce the country’s May 22 coup.
But political gatherings of five or more are illegal. So many small groups of four sit peacefully, reading books on dictatorship and totalitarianism, such as George Orwell’s classic “1984”.
