A covert philanthropist has set throngs of people in California searching for hidden envelopes stuffed with 20 and 100 dollar bills.

The anonymous donor has been posting clues to his 378,000 Twitter followers using the account @hiddencash.

Lucky winners then tweet back a picture of their find.

Hector Guerrero struck gold in Echo Park, Los Angeles.

“Yeah, I saw that he posted the clue. I recognised the Echo, because he posted it three times,” he said. “And from there I told my mom ‘Get up, let’s go to Echo Park!’ So we did. I’m missing a Dodgers game, but hey…(I found) 186 dollars!”

During an interview the mystery man said he was determined to keep his identity a secret.

His project is taking off across North America. The “hidden cash” treasure hunt has inspired people from as far away as Vancouver to set up similar pursuits.
