Former Egyptian army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi appears to be on course for a
landslide victory in the country’s presidential elections, according to early provisional results.

Sisi’s campaign team have said that he has received over 93% of the vote. Other sources have reported figures between 80% and 95%.His only rival, leftist Hamdeen Sabahi, has taken between 2.5% and 5% of the votes.

Despite an extra day of voting being added on Wednesday, turnout is believed to have been low standing at a little over 44% of Egypt’s 54 million voters.

This could cast a shadow on Sisi’s credibility as leader of the country.
