Eating Invasive Species Could Be Key to Controlling Populations

One question that’s being asked with increasing frequency is why don’t people just start eating invasive species as a means of getting rid of them.

Invasive plant and animal species are proliferating across the country and environmental experts are largely at a loss when it comes to a means of control.

One question that’s being asked with increasing frequency is why don’t people just start eating them.

Well, the truth is many have tried. There are even websites packed with invasive species serving tips and recipes.

Despite the efforts, in many cases consumers just aren’t warming up to the idea.

A prime example is the Asian carp. Be it served sautéed, fried, or free of charge, American consumers just don’t want it.

It’s a delicacy in China, and many domestic fisheries have begun to export them, but are now encountering another problem.

In some areas the carp that are caught are too small or unhealthy to serve as food.

Sadly, even the foods that people will eat, like feral hogs and lionfish, come with issues of their own.

Lionfish, despite their large numbers, are difficult to catch.

Wild hogs reproduce too quickly for hunters to make any significant progress in thinning the crowds.

And, that’s how invasive species create a problem even America can’t eat its way out of.
