A baby deer got a second chance at life on Sunday when a landscaper used a box cutter to perform a cesarean on its mother, who was killed when struck by a car near Prior Lake, Minnesota.

Bill Schulte was on his way home from church when he witnessed the mother deer get hit by the car ahead of him. Shulte pulled to the side of the road and saw that the doe had been killed. However, he noticed something moving inside the stomach of the dead deer: she was pregnant.

He pulled out a box cutter that he normally uses for cutting landscaping material and made the incision.

"It was just nice to see how he came right out nice and smooth," Schulte said, "and I just worked the neck, because his neck came out first."

He loaded the into his pickup truck and drove 30 minutes to the wildlife rehabilitation center in Roseville. He handed care of the baby deer over to Polly Rixe, who began nursing the lucky fawn to recovery.

A few days later the fawn, nicknamed Bambi, was walking around and on its way to a full recovery.
