Gritty, violent and borderline nihilistic, Martin Scorsese's 1976 classic embodies everything that was so exciting and enduringly influential about American cinema in the 1970s. It also helped cement Cannes as a festival that celebrated movies that were willing to take risks, as opposed to ones that just furthered the art house status quo.
