Terrence Malick's metaphysical epic on the nature of man and the creation of the universe isn't exactly easy viewing - which probably explains why it drew boos at Cannes in 2011 even while it was winning the Palme d'Or. And yes, it may be exactly the type of lyrical art house filmmaking you tend to picture when you think "foreign film festival," but don't let that stop you. There's still a lot of interesting notions about what it means to be a man in The Tree of Life for guys who are willing to put in the time and the brain cells (and overlook those emo CGI dinosaurs).
