On Wednesday at the Brooklyn Supreme Court, prosecutors made their opening statements in the murder trial of 75-year-old Noor Hussein, a Pakistani immigrant who beat his wife to death in her sleep at their Brooklyn home.
One night, Noor's 68-year-old wife, Nazar made lentils for dinner, instead of the goat meat Noor had asked for. They started arguing and cursing at each other, then Noor took a wooden stick and struck his wife across the mouth and arm.
Later, he waited for her to go to sleep, and then retrieved a wooden stick his wife used when washing clothes. While she lay in her bed, Noor beat his wife so severely that blood splattered the wall.
Afterward, Noor cleaned the blood then called his son, telling him, "I killed her. hurry up and come over."
The prosecution will call other Pakistani women from their building to testify that Noor had been abusing his wife for years. Noor Hussein's defense attorney Julie Clark didn't dispute that he beat his wife to death, but said Hussein didn't mean to kill his wife. Clark told the court, "He culturally believed he had the right to hit his wife and discipline his wife."
