The elderly head of one of Monaco’s richest families has died of her injuries after a gangland-style shooting that some suspect could be linked to the Italian Mafia.
Surgeons had been fighting to save the life of businesswoman Helene Pastor, 77, after she and her chauffeur were shot through the windows of her car on May 6. He has already succumbed to his injuries.
The pair were ambushed outside a hospital in the southern French city of Nice where Helene Pastor had been visiting her son.
The gunman, who is thought to have used a sawn-off shotgun, fled in a getaway car with an accomplice.
Helene Pastor’s family has built a huge property empire in Monaco and one theory is that her killing could have been ordered by organised crime groups trying to muscle in.
