Did you know the top of a palm tree can weigh a ton? Sadly, that ton of weight killed a LA man on May 17.
Los Angeles resident Tony Calderon was reportedly chatting with his neighbor Rose Cordova, while he waited for a ride to his uncle's funeral when, without warning, the top or crown of a tall palm tree fell directly on Mr. Calderon, killing him instantly.
The palm tree that killed Calderon stood some three stories tall and its canopy or crown weighed roughly one ton.
The tree's collapse also felled live power lines, and fears of electrocution made rescuers wait some two hours to retrieve the 49-year-old father's body.
Palm trees can be felled by gusts of wind, a fungus that weakens the trunk as well as the giant palm borer, a beetle that eats its way through the tree.
Local residents told the media they had asked the property owner to cut down the tall palm trees for well over a decade.
