The sombre procession continues in the Turkish town of Soma as more bodies are retrieved from the mine.

At least 292 miners lost their lives when an explosion ripped through the tunnels on Tuesday. The authorities say 10 remain underground, although union representatives claim the figure could be higher.

The anger which has followed the country’s worst industrial accident could be seen in all of the major cities.

Tear gas and water cannon were used in an effort to disperse demonstrators in Istanbul who refused to leave the site of their peaceful protest.

Many have accused the government and the mining company of negligence, charges which both parties flatly deny.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been criticised for his perceived insensitivity towards the disaster.

His ruling AKP party has called for an inquiry into the accident, just three weeks after rejecting a probe over the mine’s safety from the opposition.
