I recently reviewed a combination portable battery charger and voice recorder. I gave high marks to the battery charger, but the recorder was too awkward to operate to be very useful. So I was a little skeptical about the keychain voice recorder. I needn't have been, though. This is a really nifty little gadget that's going on my keychain. At just under 3" long and weighing only 0.6 ounces, it's no burden to carry.
The device has two functions. It's first a 4GB USB drive with FAT32 formatting and 3.82GB of free memory. It comes with two subdirectories named Voice and Music. You can store a ton of MP3s in the Music subdirectory. Voice recordings are stored in the Voice subdirectory as MP3 files. Unlike the other voice recorder I reviewed, the keychain recorder is very easy to use. To record, rotate the bottom disk clockwise until it clicks. When the red light comes on, you're recording. Rotate the disk counterclockwise to stop recording. When you're ready to playback your recordings, insert the device into a USB port and play the recordings with any media player.
The device's internal Li-ion battery is recharged through a USB port. I tried plugging it into a portable battery charger with a 1.0A output, and that also worked well.
I can think of some obvious times that the keychain recorder would be handy, but secretly recording a conversation would be one of them. No one would suspect your pile of keys of containing a recorder.
The keychain recorder is a handy little gadget that does what it says, and it's easy to use.
