Two journalists working for the Associated Press were shot by a policeman in eastern Afghanistan on Friday, and the attack claimed the life of Pulitzer-winning photographer Anja Niedringhaus.

The veteran journalists, Anja Niedringhaus and Kathy Gannon, were travelling with a convoy of election workers delivering ballots to the outskirts in Tani District. The New York Times reported that they were in their own car, accompanied by a driver and a freelance reporter.

The convoy was protected by Afghan police, soldiers and agents from the National Directorate of Security.

After the convoy arrived at a heavily guarded government compound in Tani, a policeman approached the journalists' car. He yelled 'God is great' in Arabic and fired multiple shots at the back seat. The shooter then surrendered himself.

Niedringhaus, a German nation, was killed instantly. Gannon was wounded but is presently in a stable condition.

No group has claimed responsibility, but the Taliban allege that they have infiltrated into Afghan security forces.

Security has been beefed up ahead of the presidential election scheduled on Saturday. According to the BBC, about 200,000 troops have been deployed across the country to guard against attacks.

Niedringhaus was the third journalist killed in Afghanistan in two months. Swedish Radio correspondent Nils Horner was shot dead in the Afghan capital on March 11, and Sardar Ahmad of AFP was killed alongside his wife and two children when four gunmen stormed a luxurious Serena Hotel.
