U.K. Chancellor George Osbourne announced on Friday at the country will invest £200m to build one of the world's biggest, most advanced polar research vessels, according to the BBC.
The icebreaker will be 130 metres long and have a breadth of 25 metres, with room for up to 60 scientists and support staff. The ship will be required to maintain a speed of three knots while cutting through 2-metre thick ice.
As with similar vessels, the new ship is likely to feature a helipad and a crane for loading cargo. It will also have facilities for underwater and aerial robotic craft.
The icebreaker is expected to be ready for service in 2018 for operations in both the Arctic and Antarctic.
Icebreakers will be increasingly important for countries with territory near the polar regions, as global warming makes ice conditions more unpredictable while opening new sea routes such as the Northern Sea Route, a potentially more attractive option for trade than the traditional Europe to Asia route for shipping, which passes through the Suez Canal.
