A tense standoff unfolded in Turkey Thursday as thousands of protestors squared off with police in a demonstration outside Soma, the scene of the country's worst industrial disaster. Protesters marched to express their fury over the deaths of at least 282 people in a coal mine explosion Tuesday.
Demonstrators were met with a blockade of riot police - who fired water cannons amid loud boos - eventually dispersing the crowd.
Anger has swept this country over what unions call poor workplace safety standards, at the governments perceived cosiness with mining tycoons and at the country's Prime Minister who says accidents are not uncommon.
This was one of several demonstrations across the country Thursday .
