India’s defence ministry has reportedly decided to appoint Lieutenant General Dalbir Singh as the new army chief. The development comes in the wake of an inquiry against Singh for allegedly butchering Kashmiris in fake encounters.
The ministry had decided upon Singh’s name for the chief post earlier and is now awaiting signature from the appointments committee headed by the Indian Prime Minister.
The decision will then have to be endorsed by the president.
Reportedly, Indian parliament’s opposition headed by the Bharti Janta Party (BJP) had been opposing the appointment asking to wait until the next government comes in.
BJP urged the government to leave the matter to the next government after terming the decision ‘hasty’.
