NFL: DECISION TO DRAFT GAY PLAYER SPARKS HEATED REACTION
On Saturday, 24 year old Michael Sam became the first openly gay player in history to be drafted in to America`s National Football League, the NFL. And the news has become a popular trending topic on social networks.
Messages of support for Michael Sam have been flooding in following his selection by the St Louis Rams. Posts from American football followers and also dozens of retired and current players, hailing the news, saying it will stay engraved in fans memories forever.
And while a great many web users are delighted Michael Sam will be joining the next NFL season and praising his courage for coming out as gay back in February, there has been some criticism. Certain web users, like former American football player Derrick Ward say they were shocked when they saw him kiss his boyfriend after hearing his name called. They found it offensive and even more so because it was aired live on national television.
Ultra conservative web users who also say they are astonished by the wave of support for Michael Sam on social networks and that it in view of the countless jokes at the expense of American football player Tim Tebow who is teased for his religious beliefs, it is now more acceptable to be homosexual than Christian in the US…
