PROTESTS IN CHINA OVER WASTE INCINERATOR PLAN
Police flee as angry protesters punch them and pelt them with bottles, police vans pushed over… as we can see from these pieces of amateur video footage doing the rounds online, when demonstrators took to the streets of Yuhang near to the city of Hangzhou to protest against plans to for a waste incinerator project, things turned nasty.
Residents in this eastern Chinese region have been protesting for some days now, opposing the proposed construction of a waste incineration plant near their homes. Many locals have taken to social networks, voicing their concerns over the impact it will have on their health and the environment. They are also condemning the fact there had been no public consultation over the plans.
So the protests took a violent turn on Saturday when clashes erupted between police and the thousands of demonstrators that had gathered on the motorway that leads to Shanghai to block traffic at this major intersection. According to China`s official news agency, 39 people were injured, including 29 police officers.
Several similar projects have been abandoned in recent years following opposition from locals fearing they will bring pollution and disease. And in view of the backlash from residents of Yuhang, the authorities have announced they will not pursue construction of the waste incinerator plant without the support of the people.
