But the doctor is also infamous in Pakistan for using the cover of a door-to-door vaccination campaign to help the U.S. find Bin Laden.
Now Dr Afridi's lawyer has resigned from the case he took up two years ago because of safety concerns.
(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) LAWYER SAMIULLAH AFRIDI, SAYING:
"The problems that we have faced in the past two years are not hidden from anyone. I have been receiving threats from various organisations and because of those threats I even went to Dubai some time back. So one reason is these threats. Some organisations do not want us to continue defending this case. I am getting threats almost on a regular basis. Not only is my life in danger, my family is also in danger. I have therefore decided to quit this case."
